Premium squares only count on the first turn they are used on. When calculating the value of a word that is on a Premium Word Square, Premium Letter Squares should be factored into the word total first. A red square is a Premium Word Square and if any letter from a word is placed on this square, the value of the entire word is tripled. A pink square is a Premium Word Square and if any letter from a word is placed on this square, the value of the entire word is doubled. A dark blue square is a Premium Letter Square and it triples the score of the letter placed on it. A light blue square is a Premium Letter Square and it doubles the score of the letter placed on it. Unless the tile is on a Premium Letter Square, these should be counted at face value and totaled for the word.Īccording to scrabble rules, there are two types of premium squares: Premium Letter and Premium Word Squares. If any of the words are not legal, all tiles are returned to their owner’s hand and that player loses his or her turn. If the challenged word is not legal, those tiles return to the player’s hand and that player loses the turn. If you want to challenge an opponent’s word, you must challenge it before play moves on to the next player.

There is also a free online Scrabble dictionary available for use. Many Scrabble players opt to buy an Official Scrabble Player’s Dictionary. The only words present in a dictionary that are not legal are as follows: abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes standing alone, words that require a hyphen or apostrophe, and words requiring capitalization. All words in that dictionary that are labeled as parts of speech, including foreign origin, obsolete, and slang words, are permitted. According to Scrabble rules, players should agree before the game begins on the dictionary they will use. Whenever a word is played, other players may challenge the word if they do not believe it is a real word or it is spelled wrong.
No tile can be moved or shifted once it is played (baring a successful challenge).
